Living Word's Outreach Efforts

Sierra Leone, West Africa

The work in Sierra Leone was under missionary leadership “United Brethren” until 1985. In 1994, the Missions withdrew all missionaries and shortly afterwards, rebels invaded Mattru and stripped it of nearly everything of value. Nearly 2.5 people were displaced in the country during this time of unrest. Many persons were given asylum in the United States. Most of the UB churches and schools were closed.

The schools are now open, however the campus is dilapidated. There are over 1,000 students attending two-shift day and evening schedule due to limited space and resources. When the weather is bad there is no school, as classes are being held outside. The children need classrooms, labs, and library. Those that travel from a long distance to attend school need boarding. The toilets and water systems don’t work. There is no electricity. There is much to do in Sierra Leone.

Living Word Outreach Ministry in conjunction with CEOSA a group from Sierra Leone that now live in the US are beginning the work to rebuild the schools. We are working on two programs at this time for Sierra Leone, Mattru.

  • Rebuilding the sanitation system
  • Scholarships for students to attend school.

The cost to sponsor a child for the whole school year, to include room and board, books, school registration, and incidentals is $550. However, any amount is greatly appreciated.
